The Building for the Future First Nations Housing Symposium was held on November 21, 2023 at Wanuskewin near Saskatoon. The gathering brought together First Nations community representatives, researchers, the building industry, non-government organizations and government representatives to talk about Indigenous housing, health and practical ways to move the work forward.
A major part of the discussion was the connection between housing conditions, health and community wellbeing. Participants also shared strengths, successes and practical experiences from First Nations housing programs across Saskatchewan.
From the Symposium to the Housing Hub
The conversations helped organize the work into four areas that are now reflected throughout the Saskatchewan First Nations Housing Hub:
- Policy & Governance
- Builds & Procurement
- Asset Management
- Training & Transition
Participants also identified the importance of continued networking, sharing resources and staying connected after events are over. The Housing Hub is being developed as one way to keep that information and connection available in one place.
